Dr Tertius Venter UK cycle tour starts 3 May 2016

Dr Tertius Venter, a South African, is a full-time volunteer plastic surgeon on the Africa Mercy Ship that docks in some of the world’s poorest countries to offer free life altering surgeries. He founded the Cycle Miles for Smiles campaign to raise awareness and gain support for those who cannot afford medical care but desperately need it to improve their lives.

Executive Mayor of Tshwane joins Cycle Miles for Smiles in support of the Airlink capital-to-capital partnership

The Executive Mayor of Tshwane, Cllr Solly Msimanga, will cycle part of the first leg of a cycle tour on 2 November 2016. The cycle tour, called Cycle Miles for Smiles, Capital-to-Capital, starts at the Wonderboom National Airport in Northern Tshwane, where cyclists will depart at 06:00 and make their way to the mayoral offices in Centurion. The Executive Mayor will then join them at 07:30, whereafter he will cycle with them for a short distance to demonstrate his support. When leaving the cycle tour, the Executive Mayor will send a message of goodwill (Baton of Friendship), which will be handed over to the Executive Mayor of the City of Cape Town when the journey ends on 15 November in the Mother City. The tour marks the 80th year anniversary of the Wonderboom Airport as well as the first year of daily scheduled flights between the historic capitals. The Baton of Friendship symbolises the intention of the two capital cities to take the lead in working together for a better South Africa. One of the objectives is to explore the tourism potential of the capitals and to establish opportunities which are of mutual benefit.

The Cycle Miles for Smiles, Capital-to-Capital event is spearheaded by Doctor Tertius Venter, a well-known plastic and reconstructive surgeon. He founded the Cycle Miles for Smiles campaign with the aim to raise awareness for the poor and marginalised communities who have no access to, or cannot afford basic medical and surgical care. By hosting the start of this heart-warming capital-to-capital event in Tshwane, the Executive Mayor will join him in reaching out to the poorest of the poor as well as his desire to start spreading a new culture of compassion – a culture of service delivery and at the same time caring for those who are born into poverty and who are unable to help themselves.

Councillor Msimanga is rapidly changing the City of Tshwane and making a difference. Since taking office in August this year, he not only took immediate action by changing things, he also led by example. When he met with the cyclists’ team leader in early August, he commended him for doing his part in helping the poor in such a heart-warming way. He then indicated that he would be cycling the first leg of the campaign with the team to demonstrate his support.

This event will also raise awareness for the 80th anniversary of the airport and the operation of scheduled flights between Tshwane and Cape Town by Airlink last year. Airlink is a benevolent partner of the Cycle Miles for Smiles, Capital to Capital event. Furthermore, the Executive Mayor will take the initiative of launching an exciting and fun-filled platform for other cities and towns to follow suit in helping the poor and destitute and, at the same time promoting the tourism potential of their cities and towns.

This cycle tour is a symbolic voice for those who cannot speak or defend for themselves, and as a result , this heart-warming event will open a new link between the two historic cities whilst highlighting the plight of the poor. This powerful connection between the two capital cities, connected to the bicycles, will send a strong message of hope; a wish to change their circumstances and make the world a better place for them… one smile at a time!
